Obamacare does not include adult dental insurance, but it may be more cost-friendly than you think

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare, names pediatric dental benefits one of the 10 essential health benefits that must be included in certain health plans under Obamacare. However, Obamacare doesn’t include adult dental insurance.

The reason? Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental care, and “that inertia spilled over into the ACA,” said Dr. David Krol, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the largest philanthropy in the U.S. that is dedicated solely to health.

The good news is that dental insurance may not be as costly as some may think. The average premium for adult, individual health insurance plans varies by plan. However, the monthly cost of a dental plan may be a little more than $1 per day. For example, a 40-year-old woman living in Denver may pay around $30 per month for a basic PPO plan that covers preventive cleanings and diagnostic X-rays at 100%.1

Typically, preventive services such as routine exams and cleanings are benefits covered at no extra charge or a small fraction of the service's actual cost. Again, what is covered and how much will vary by plan.

Dental insurance helps with oral health care costs, including preventive care and procedures important to maintaining wellness. If you don’t currently have dental insurance, perhaps this news--that premium prices and other dental insurance-related costs are easier on the budget than earlier assumed--will encourage you to consider purchasing coverage.
