As part of an ongoing series, we will check in with each state¹s health insurance exchange and provide latest available open enrollment numbers, important details and any recent news. Our latest featured exchange is Connect for Health Colorado.

Enrollment update: 187,234 Coloradans enrolled in health insurance coverage through the Connect for Health Colorado exchange between Oct. 1, 2013, and Jan. 31, 2014, The Denver Post reported this week.1 Of that total, 117,607 enrolled in Medicaid and 69,627 enrolled in private health insurance plans.

As of Feb. 5, 2014, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation reported that 12.7 percent of the total population eligible for marketplace coverage in Colorado had enrolled. Colorado ranked 7th in terms of percentage of eligible residents enrolled in exchange-based health insurance coverage.2

In related news: On Feb. 3, 2014, Kaiser Health News published "The 10 Most Expensive Insurance Markets in the U.S." The Colorado Mountain Resort
Region, which includes counties that are home to Aspen and Vail ski resorts, topped the list. The ranking is based on the lowest price Silver plan, which amounted to $483 in this area.3

Colorado's first statewide health insurance carrier has attracted 1 in 10 exchange enrollees. On Jan. 25, 2014, Colorado HealthOP, issued a press release announcing that it held 10 percent of the market share among those who had enrolled in health insurance coverage through Connect for Health
Colorado.4 Including Colorado Health OP, ConnectforHealthCO.com lists 10 carriers for its individual and family marketplace. It is among six carriers offering health insurance coverage in the small group marketplace.5

Additionally, reports from several media outlets, including KRCC, Connect for Health Colorado officials reported at the end of January that the
state's exchange is on its way to being self-sustaining when federal subsidies run out next year.6
